The Psychology of Scent

Dr. Rachel S. Herz is a neuroscientist, and is considered the world's foremost expert on the psychology of smell. She recently has put her name behind Scentology, one of the first fragrance lines designed not just for ornamental value, but to have specific side effects. There's citrus-based Bliss Booster, peppermint-scented Endurance Enhancer and vanilla fragrance Crave Control, designed to quash those post-lunch chocolate urges. "I've never wanted to associate with anything that wasn't really founded and grounded in scientific work that has been properly vetted and published, so I had always been resistant to fragrance development offers," Herz explains. "So the fragrances that we do have are ones that are well supported by scientific data."

Fool Your Sweet Tooth with Scent

A whiff of vanilla may be the antidote for your craving for a double dip of Ben & Jerry's New York Super Fudge Chunk ice cream. Here's the theory, according to experts: The inherent sweetness of vanilla sends neuropeptides (gut-to-brain messengers) into a kind of sensory overload that fools you into feeling like you've satisfied your sweet tooth. Any vanilla scent -- extract, body lotion, or a candle -- has a similar effect. A special spray designed to curb appetite may work, too. One to try: Scentology's Crave Control, which was developed by Rachel Herz, Ph.D., a psychologist at Brown University's Medical School and author of "The Scent of Desire."

The Science of Fragrance

Dr. Rachel Herz is a renowned neuroscientist, as well as the world's leading expert on the psychology of smell. Her pragmatic approach to scent hasn't produced fashion-branded perfumes or designer scented candles. Instead, Herz has given her support to Scentology, a brand of spray-on perfume products which include the citrus based mood enhancer Bliss Booster, peppermint-powered Endurance Enhancer and vanilla scented Crave Control. All three products use specific scents for their scientifically verified effects.

Refresh your Senses

Your sense of smell is more directly associated with your brains function than any other senses. A jolt of peppermint can be more effective than that morning cup of coffee. Maximize alertness with Endurance Enhancer from Scentology.

Uncommon Scents

Can a perfume really help you improve your mood and hit the gym a little harder? After testing out some of these "aromas with extras" to see how they work, Scentology's Bliss Booster was found to be a somewhat of a mood brightener. All skepticism was sprayed away with a liberal application of Scentology's Endurance Enhancer just before a four-mile run. The minty fragrance left a pleasant soapy smell and left the New York Post reporter feeling more energized and invigorated throughout the run, and for hours afterward.
